Most Sydney weekends start with a parking problem. This one does not have to.
Casa Sol y Agua sits in the middle of Umina Beach: a flat three-minute walk to the sand of Broken Bay in one direction, and the same walk the other way to West Street — cafés, bakery, supermarket, chemist. The house is a restored Spanish Mission cottage, three bedrooms, one bathroom, with a proper kitchen and a living room set up for long evenings. The point of a stay here is not a circuit of other beaches. It is Umina, on foot.
That is the useful difference from a typical Blue Mountains Saturday. Similar travel time from many Sydney suburbs, but once you are here the car can stay put.
Three minutes to the sand
Umina Beach is the long, open stretch — space to walk, swim when conditions are kind, and not much theatre. Central Coast Council’s next advertised patrol season is 26 September 2026 to 25 April 2027, so late August is unpatrolled. Check the water, do not treat it as a flagged summer swim, and a long beach walk is still the simplest thing to do from the front gate.
Mornings here start with the ocean in the distance and the village a few minutes away. You can be on the sand before the coffee queue, or the other way around. Helene, who stayed in the house, put it simply: three minutes into town for coffee, or the other way and you are at the beach in the same time.
More on the local stretch is on our Umina Beach local beaches page. The house itself is Casa Sol y Agua.
West Street without a drive
West Street is the practical village strip, not a tourist boardwalk. Bremen Patisserie at 302 West Street is the long-running bakery for pies and pastries. Café RONTO at 304 West Street does coffee and a mixed Modern Australian menu. Six Degrees (Shop 8 / 327 West Street) is the big-breakfast local. Ruby’s Cafe & Books (Shop 1 / 322 West Street) is coffee plus second-hand books. Woolworths sits on the corner of West and Trafalgar; Coles is on Oscar Street; ALDI is on Trafalgar Avenue. Blooms the Chemist is at Shop 6 / 286 West Street.
Dinner does not need a booking in another suburb. Copper Pot (Indian) at 1/206 West Street, Thai Season at 346 West Street, Miori Japanese on Trafalgar Avenue, and Margarita Daze at 345 Trafalgar Avenue if you want a view. Opening hours change — check on the day. A full list is on our Umina cafés and restaurants page.
If you would rather cook, the kitchen is a working kitchen: full-size fridge, oven, cooktop, dishwasher, microwave, and the usual tools. Shop at Woolworths or Coles on the walk in, and you are done.
Evenings in the house
The living room is the reason not to go out every night. High ceilings, polished timber, a fireplace, Starlink Wi-Fi, and a 65-inch screen that sits as a framed painting when it is off. It is set up for films and a slow evening, not for looking at your phone in a rental lounge. The master bedroom has a four-poster; two further bedrooms take family or friends. There is one bathroom, so it works best as a small household, not a crowd.
Private gardens, patio and a rear courtyard give you a morning coffee spot and an evening drink without joining a beach car park. High-speed internet is there if someone still has to work Friday afternoon.
Getting here from Sydney
Drive the M1. If you are in an EV, charge at the Tesla Supercharger at 392 Manns Road, West Gosford — 12 stalls, up to 300 kW, Tesla and other CCS cars — on the way in or out. Check the Tesla app for live stalls. There is destination charging listed at NRMA Ocean Beach Holiday Resort, 90 Sydney Avenue, Umina, if you need a slower top-up once you are here.
Weekend parking at the beach can fill. The house is useful because you are not competing for a foreshore space. Walk.
A simple weekend
Friday night: arrive, walk West Street, cook or eat in the village, film in the living room.
Saturday: long Umina Beach walk, café, maybe a swim if the water looks honest, supermarket if you need it, garden in the late afternoon.
Sunday: another beach walk, coffee, then home — Supercharger at West Gosford if you want it on the M1.
You do not need a second destination. Umina is the stay.
