If you live in Sydney and the weekend usually means a drive west into the Blue Mountains, it is worth knowing there is another option about the same sort of travel time for many suburbs: four beaches on one peninsula, with a village in the middle.
Umina Beach, Ettalong Beach, Pearl Beach and Patonga Beach sit close enough together that you can treat them as one short break rather than four separate trips. The useful move is to stay in Umina, walk to the sand and the cafés, then pick the other three beaches according to the weather, the tide and how far you feel like going.
Start with Umina
Umina is the long, open-ocean beach. It is the one with space: a wide stretch of sand, a straightforward walk along the shore, and the village a few minutes inland. In season it is patrolled; the last advertised Beachwatch patrol window ran to 26 April 2026, so late August is outside lifeguard season. Check conditions on the day, swim between the flags when they are up, and treat winter water as colder and less supervised.

The practical advantage for a Sydney weekender is logistics. You can leave the car once you arrive. Cafés and shops are concentrated along West Street and around the beach, so breakfast, a swim and a late walk do not need a second drive. Weekend parking at Umina and Ettalong can fill up. Staying in the village, rather than circling for a beachfront space, is the simple fix.
More on each stretch is on our local beaches guide.
Ettalong when the ocean is messy
Ettalong sits on Brisbane Water, not the open sea. When August wind is up — August is historically one of the windier months on this stretch — Ettalong is often the calmer option for a foreshore walk or a paddle.
It is also the ferry beach. Palm Beach Ferries run a daily service between Palm Beach and Ettalong Beach via Wagstaffe. The crossing is about 30 minutes. Passengers are asked to be on the wharf ten minutes before departure, and the service can divert or change in bad weather. The operator confirmed a return to the normal timetable from 1 June 2026; still check palmbeachferries.com.au/timetables on the morning you go.
For Northern Beaches households, that ferry is the difference between this weekend and a Katoomba one: you can skip some of the car slog and arrive on the water.
Pearl Beach for a quieter hour
Pearl Beach is smaller, bush-framed and slower. It is a short drive from Umina, not a second holiday destination. The southern end has an ocean rock pool that suits a short swim when the open beach is lumpy. Facilities are limited compared with Umina, so treat it as a couple of hours rather than a full day unless you have packed food.

If you want a lookout without a long hike, Mount Ettalong Lookout above Pearl is a short, easy walk with views back over Pearl and Umina.
Patonga, then the walk between the two
Patonga sits at the southern tip of the peninsula, where the Hawkesbury meets the sea. The village is small, the water is generally calmer, and it works best as a half-day rather than your only beach.

The standout activity linking Pearl and Patonga is the official Patonga to Pearl Beach walking track in Brisbane Water National Park. NSW National Parks lists it as 3 km one-way, about 1½ to 2 hours, Grade 5 (moderately challenging). It starts from the end of Patonga Beach and exits at Crystal Avenue in Pearl Beach. Park entry is currently listed at $8 per vehicle per day. The park page notes the track can be affected by closures, so check local alerts before you leave. Take water, decent shoes, and a plan for getting back — it is one-way through bush, not a beach promenade.
You can walk one way and arrange a lift, or turn around. Either way, a house in Umina means you are not finishing a Grade 5 track and then driving back to Sydney the same afternoon. See the Umina Beach holiday house if you want a base in the village.
A simple weekend shape
Friday or Saturday: arrive, walk Umina Beach, eat in the village. Saturday: ferry into or out of Ettalong if it suits, or stay on the calm foreshore if the ocean is rough. Sunday morning: Pearl rock pool or the Patonga–Pearl track, then an easy run home.

Village eating options are listed on our Umina cafés and restaurants page.
If you drive an EV, public charging on the peninsula is limited. There is destination charging listed at NRMA Ocean Beach Holiday Resort, 90 Sydney Avenue, Umina Beach. Check the Transport for NSW EV map or PlugShare for live status rather than relying on a single post.
None of this needs a packed itinerary. The point, compared with a typical Blue Mountains weekend, is the change of texture: sand instead of escarpment, a 30-minute ferry instead of a lookout car park, and four beaches you can actually use from one address.
Stay in the middle of Umina and the rest of the peninsula stays optional, not exhausting. https://airbnb.com.au/h/umina23syd
